4) Give the economy a chance to turn around - Things aren't going to get better immediately, so in the meantime, stop worrying about finding a new job. Stick with the one you have (no matter how bad it may be) and have your continuing education be your saving grace while you zone out during your next staff meeting. If you're not currently working, this could be a great time to focus entirely on school and potentially land an internship that can lead to a full-time offer before you graduate.How, then, do managers transcend from a traditional, transactional approach to leadership, in which the manager negotiates with the subordinate: "Do this, and this is what I'll give you." Often, these are not explicit conversations, but rather implicit understandings. The employee knows that if he does 'this and this,' and not 'that and that,' he'll receive something in return. Does this method of 'leadership' build commitment from staff? Does it enroll the individual in a common mission and vision? Or is it oriented more towards compliance and implicit consent of not rocking the boat?One might argue that if Instructional Design encompasses all aspects of creating eLearning materials, then it begins to phase out the need for professional IDs because any subject matter who knows the design tools can develop eLearning. I disagree. Just because someone knows how to use the tools doesn't mean he or she knows how to write instructionally. In fact, I believe the more an ID can branch out, the more marketable and necessary we become. It's one-stop shopping.It is only in the past decade that a growing portion of the literature is concentrating on Leadership Development from the inside out. This involves getting people in formal or informal leadership positions to take a hard look at themselves. "Who am I as a leader? Why do I behave as I do?" are questions that we need to periodically ask ourselves. When we pose these questions, it takes us to a deeper level of inquiry and reflection.Consider books, courses, audio programs all a part of your grander learning process. Commit to finding ways to practice what you are learning, and to finding ways to receive feedback (from yourself and/or others) about your progress.Training should be designed so that you can enter the training process when it suits you, the trainee. Well designed and constructed training meets trainee needs. Trainees should be able to join and leave the training as it suits their needs, not locked into a process that puts the needs of the training provider as first priority.Write an article for publication in a local paper, professional journal or organizational newsletter. Do not discount that you are NOT knowledgeable or no one else would be interested in what you do for a living.2-Utilize trackers!! Tracking your progress is imperative. In fact, many learning Leadership project have seen that tracking alone increases productivity by 10% or more, without implementing any other changes. When you've implemented something new, whether it's a new marketing strategy or perio program, using a tracker will allow you to see what's working and where you need to make adjustments. If your hygiene team is presenting the perio treatment but it's not showing up on the tracker as completed, then you know you need to look at how you're admin team is presenting financial arrangements or if the schedule is allowing those patients to be cared for quickly.An extremely useful step in our Leadership Development is seeing myself as others see me. So I need to understand their perceptions of my behavior. My effectiveness in leading, relating to, or working with others is highly dependent on their perceptions of me. I may not agree with what they see, but their perception is our reality. Those around me have an opinion of who they think the real me is. Their perceived "truth" becomes the way they treat me. Their perception forms their part of the reality of our relationship.Invest in your Leadership Development. Books, podcasts and teaching videos cost a lot. But consider them as an investment, in which you will reap the benefits of greater effectiveness and efficiency in your leadership. And when you become a better leader, you can certainly lead people to greater heights and better performance. Doesn't that deserve a salary raise?The third reason for YOU to call customers is that you appear more successful when you do. Just reflect on the story I shared with you. If you HAD to place a bet right now regarding the success of all the learning Leadership project I described, who would you bet on as being the most successful? You'd probably bet on the consultant that called me. When you call your customers, they see you as someone who's doing her job well and obviously has it together.
